# Chunking
Is a phenomenon in [[Cognitive Psychology]] that shows that our brains find it much easier to remember things in groups. For example when asked to remember 8 digits it'll be much easier for you to remember them as 2 groups of 4 digits than 1 group of 8. Chunking is why phone numbers are remembered in groups.
A chunk is defined as the largest meaningful unit that a person recognizes, and will thus depend on a person's knowledge. [^1]
