# The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact
Is a proposed (as of February 2021) agreement between several U.S. states that, if approved by enough states, would ensure that the winner of the popular vote wins the Presidential Election. This would effectively bypass the [[Electoral College]].
The agreement stipulates that all signatories should assign [[Electoral College]] electors to the winner of the popular vote. It will come into effect when enough States sign the Compact to guarantee the majority in the [[Electoral College]].
The Compact is for all intents and purposes a constitutional amendment but one that won't go through the regular ratification process. It's a backdoor, and as such its constitutionality is being challenged and its faith will ultimately have to be decided by SCOTUS.
