# Should All Drugs Be Legalized? This question doesn't immediately seem linked to the freedom of speech and the primacy of [[The First Amendment]], but it is. **If drugs were legal, what would prevent drug-makers from advertising drug use on billboards throughout the United States** (see [[If Cannabis Is Legalized, Should All Drugs Be]]), **and is that OK?** Right now drugs are illegal on the federal level (but some are tolerated like marijuana). If that were to change, wouldn't advertising drugs be protected under [[The First Amendment]]? Psychologist [[Carl Hart]] believes that **our society's dislike of modern drugs is misguided, mostly due to a lack of understanding and the infamy of drug users created by mass media**. He also gives a pretty good libertarian argument for legalization: ![[Why Aren’t All Drugs Legal#^9yy268]] He was a guest on this Lex Friedman podcast: [[Carl Hart Heroin, Cocaine, MDMA, Alcohol & the Role of Drugs in Society]]. And also a guest of the [[People I (Mostly) Admire]] podcast by Steven Levitt: [[Why Aren’t All Drugs Legal]]. Hart wrote a book on the topic called [Drug Use for Grown-Ups: Chasing Liberty in the Land of Fear](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53481723-drug-use-for-grown-ups).
