# Thoughts on Marriage The government should not interfere so much into our private lives by defining marriage as a union between two people. **I'll even go as far as to claim that it is unconstitutional, because it goes against the [[The First Amendment|Establishment Clause]] as the definition unfairly supports only those religions that define it as such (union of two people). I believe that ==‘marriage’ is a religious facility, a tool if you will, for promoting moral standards, and I do not think the government should assume the role of moral authority.==** **There are certain legal benefits that come with marriage that have nothing to do with moral standards** (which deal with inheritance, taxes, representation and such), and I am honestly **not sure I can support them, as they unfairly discriminate against unmarried couples.** Why are we discriminating based on marital status? That seems to me to be exactly the kind of thing the government should not be allowed to meddle in. I understand my views are extreme but please don’t discard them right away just because they go against your moral code. Right now, I am not arguing against (or for) any particular view, but against a broad universal standard. Certain moral standards should certainly be imposed, when the lack thereof directly and demonstratively impacts the general population in a negative way, but any claim that the legalization of gay marriage (or of marriage of 3+ people[^1]) has a direct negative impact on a straight American is clearly bigoted. [^1]: Careful there, research indicates that widespread polygamy does have adverse societal impact.
